Breathing easier with Mukuru Clean Stoves
Environmental science graduate Charlot Magayi had barely exited her teens when she started Mukuru Clean Stoves to eliminate life-threatening household air pollution for millions while saving them millions of dollars in fuel costs. Her infant daughter’s burn injury from a traditional stove spurred Charlot to take action and develop a safer option. Mukuru uses locally recycled metals to manufacture stoves that retail for 75% less than alternatives. Fueled by a composite of charcoal, wood, and sugarcane, they yield a 70% reduction in household air pollution. Increasing monthly production from 5,000 to 10,000 units, Mukuru has distributed more than 250,000 affordable, reliable stoves.
