Agri-tech and traceability boost fair trade for African shea producers
With Sommalife’s TreeSyt software, Christina Gyisun digitized the shea value chain, tapping 65,000 scattered West African producers into a $2.2 billion global shea market. The seed for Sommalife is rooted in a Ghanaian market where nine-year-old water seller Christina encountered women trekking vast distances to trade for slim profits. Converting memories into milestones, Sommalife combines agri-tech with agroforestry, traceability, and financing support, realizing record harvest improvements and income increases for Ghana and Burkina Faso shea farmers. The symbiotic relationship has flourished for 20 participating food and cosmetic companies in Europe, Asia, and the U.S., with guaranteed access to quality produce and source transparency.
