Our Hero Spotlight of the Month, Elmarie Pereira is our ABH 2022 Top 10 Hero and curator of the Johannesburg Hub. She is the Co-Founder and CEO of Memeza Shout (PTY) Ltd., a South African social enterprise committed to improving community safety, particularly in underserved and vulnerable areas. Memeza developed the country's first public alarm system endorsed by the South African government.

The company develops innovative safety technologies, including public and personal alarm systems, mobile panic apps, and e-policing networks, directly linked to the South African Police Service (SAPS) and community response systems. These systems aim to enhance police response times and empower communities to self-police. Their solutions aim to enhance police response times, reduce crime, and support victims of gender-based violence (GBV).

Memeza recently introduced its Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Reduction and Prevention Programme in Tshilwavhusiku, Limpopo. Supported by the FirstRand Empowerment Fund, this initiative focuses on deploying advanced safety technologies and creating responsive community networks. Key efforts include installing alarms in GBV-affected households, distributing personal safety devices, and equipping teachers with emergency-response training.

The company has formed partnerships with over 240 police stations, reaching 243 communities across South Africa. This collaboration has significantly boosted police efficiency, with an 89% improvement in response times. Additionally, Memeza has contributed to substantial reductions in sexual offenses and theft in high-risk areas, particularly schools and informal settlements.

In March 2024, Memeza gained international recognition by participating in the SheTrades Mauritius Trade Mission. This event allowed the company to showcase its innovative safety solutions on a global stage, leading to new opportunities and potential collaborations in international markets. These efforts position Memeza as a leading innovator in community-driven crime prevention and social impact in South Africa, with plans to expand its reach across Africa.

Looking ahead, Memeza plans to expand its reach, including moving into neighboring countries and creating 10,000 jobs over the next five years. They aim to protect 6,000 schools and provide safety solutions to 15,000 vulnerable homes and businesses. Elmarie’s leadership and the company’s innovative approach exemplify the power of social entrepreneurship in tackling systemic issues in Africa.

Congratulations to Elmarie Pereira and Memeza on this remarkable achievement from all of us in the ABH community.
