Our Spotlight Hero of the Month is Mohamed Ali, a 2023 Top 10 Hero and founder of iLOCK, an Egyptian that designs and manufactures a range of innovative electrical accessories, including power cords, adapters, and chargers, engineered to protect both people and machines from electrical hazards. Today,iLock produces over 70 different products and employs more than 200 people, mostly women. He has patents issued in Egypt, Russia, and China, with more patents pending.
After his young daughter suffered a life-threatening electrical shock from a loose wire, aerospace engineer Mohamed Ali was driven to invent safer electrical systems. With just $30,000, he founded iLock (formerly Powerlock) in 2018 to address this critical safety gap. iLock designs and manufactures a range of innovative electrical accessories—including power cords, adapters, and chargers—engineered to protect both people and machines from electrical hazards, with all operations based in Cairo. The company has secured patents for its safety technology in 30 countries, with its flagship Female Plug featuring a patented locking mechanism. To date, iLock has produced over 10 million units at its Egyptian facility, making its products available in 10 countries and earning the title of best-selling electrical brand on Amazon France. With over 100 employees and a strong manufacturing base, iLock continues to raise the bar for electrical safety and is now pursuing expansion across African markets.
